Caserta

Details

Caserta was probably founded by the Lombards in the 8th century on the site of a Roman emplacement atop Monte Tifata, the town spread into the plains below from the 12th century on.

The constructionof the Bourbons’ grande palace assured the town a certain grandeur it otherwise would never have known.

Very famous is the Palazzo Reale, also known as Reggia di Caserta, that was built by the Bourbons of Naples and modelled on Versailles.

Work started after Charles III of Bourbon decided he would build himself a palace similiar to Vesailles. A walk in the elegant gardens is a must.
